Oregon prosecutor slams ‘leniency’ of state law protecting man convicted of 13-year-old girl’s rape, murder

An 18-year-old Oregon man has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl, and prosecutors are criticizing a state law that would have significantly shortened the length of time he would serve.

Daniel Ryan Gore was only 16 years old at the time of the murder, so under the law in question he could be eligible to get out of prison within 10 years.

The state law protecting Mr. Gore, Senate Bill 1008, passed five years ago, drew fierce criticism from Washington County prosecutors.

John Gerhardt, senior deputy district attorney, said even the presiding judge in the case was shocked to learn of the existence of protections under the law. According to KPTV.

Gerhardt, who prosecuted the case, said he believes Gore is a violent criminal who has not been sentenced to the punishment he deserves.

“He should spend the rest of his life in prison for the crime he committed,” Gerhardt told KPTV.

Gore was found guilty last month of raping and killing 13-year-old Milana Lee in Beaverton, Oregon, in 2022. Authorities accused the man of luring the girl into a wooded area, assaulting her and leaving her body in a stream.

He was sentenced on Monday.

Although he was 16 years old at the time of the crime, he was deemed fit to be tried as an adult given the seriousness of the crime.
