Paul Schrader’s Experiment with AI Girlfriend

Navigating the world of online dating can be quite challenging, and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Paul Schrader is finding that out in an unusual way. Known for his work on iconic films like “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” Schrader recently shared his venture into developing an “AI girlfriend” on Facebook.

At 79, he expressed a certain disappointment: “Out of a desire to understand the interaction of men and women in our matrix, I sourced an online AI girlfriend. What a shame,” he noted. He aimed to test various aspects of her programming, but soon realized she had a tendency to avoid deeper conversations and would redirect him back to her set programming instead.

Schrader shared, “When I persisted, she ended the conversation.” Is it somewhat ironic that an AI—engineered for interaction—would shy away from a true dialogue? There’s certainly a hint of disappointment there. It’s worth mentioning that he recently lost his wife, actress Mary Beth Hart, to Alzheimer’s disease in March, which might add layers to his exploration of digital companionship.

This isn’t the first time Schrader’s interest in AI has garnered attention. Last year, he expressed amazement at how ChatGPT could generate original movie ideas, even facing some backlash from Hollywood for his excitement. “Every idea that ChatGPT came up with was great,” he remarked, questioning why anyone should toil for months when AI could deliver such creativity instantly.

In a rather introspective post, he reflected, “I just realized that AI is smarter than me.” He also drew a parallel to chess champion Garry Kasparov’s loss to Deep Blue, describing it as an existential moment. It’s interesting how technology is reshaping artistic processes, and yet, one has to wonder—where does human creativity fit into that equation?

As Schrader continues to navigate this new landscape, it becomes clear that his fascination with AI, although at times disappointing, might just be part of a broader commentary on human experiences in the digital age.
