Over 365 protesters against Israel detained in London for opposing Palestine restrictions

Police in London apprehended over 360 protesters on Saturday as many openly defied a recent ban aimed at curtailing support for specific pro-Palestinian groups.

The British Parliament enacted this ban last month following incidents where activists infiltrated royal airbases and damaged aircraft. The law equates support for these organizations with support for terrorism, labeling it illegal.

Demonstrators argued that the ban infringes on free speech, and by the time the protests concluded, at least 365 individuals had been arrested.

More than 500 people gathered outside the Parliament, with some holding signs that read, “I oppose genocide. I support Palestinian actions.” These displays prompted police intervention.

According to a police statement, “Anyone who came to Parliament Square today to hold a placard expressing support for Palestinian actions has been arrested.”

The protest’s organizers stated their aim was to showcase the impracticality of the new law. One of the protest leaders mentioned, “The police have only managed to arrest a small portion of those believed to be committing ‘terrorism’ crimes, most of whom were given street bail and sent home. This is a significant embarrassment for the government and further tarnishes the reputation of a law that was meant to penalize those who reveal their own misconduct.”

This demonstration occurred just a day after Israeli security officials endorsed plans to occupy Gaza, marking a new escalation in Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas.

The security cabinet approved several principles, which included disarming Hamas, retrieving all hostages, and establishing Israeli control over the Gaza Strip.

In a comment about these plans, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that most members of the security cabinet believed that the proposed alternatives would not effectively defeat Hamas or ensure the return of hostages.
