Oxford Union President-Elect Resigns After Controversial Comments

The newly elected president of the Oxford Union, George Abalaonye, faced backlash following his insensitive remarks about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Abalaonye stated that his comments, which led to his resignation, had “missed the point.”

On Friday, the 20-year-old expressed his regrets to Kirk’s widow, Erica, and their two children for his remarks made shortly after Kirk’s death on September 10 at Utah Valley University.

“I want to extend my apologies and condolences. No one should experience the loss of their husband, and no child should grow up without a father. I truly hope they can find a way to heal from this tragic situation, and I am deeply sorry,” Abalaonye said.

As president of the historic debate club, established in 1823, Abalaonye initially seemed to support Kirk following the shooting but later acknowledged his lack of awareness regarding the severity of the incident.

Shortly after the shooting, he posted a message on WhatsApp saying, “Charlie Kirk has been shot, let’s go.” He followed up with another post on Instagram acknowledging that Kirk had been shot badly.

Abalaonye claimed his comments came before seeing the video footage of the incident, which lacked context. “I really didn’t grasp the context of what I was responding to, but I aimed to spark a discussion… It was beside the point… So I deleted the comment and apologized on Instagram,” he recounted to reporters. “I came to understand the gravity of the situation.”

After facing considerable backlash, Abalaonye was removed from his position through a no-confidence vote on October 21.

“I reacted without thinking it through or researching the situation,” he admitted. “The headlines grabbed my attention, and I didn’t consider the complexities involved in my statement.”

His resignation was confirmed following a vote of 1,228 to 501 on November 24.

A third-year student studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, Abalaonye had engaged with Kirk during his visit to Oxford in May.

During the debate, he appeared quite casual, dressed in sweatpants and a T-shirt. He challenged Kirk to elaborate on his assertion that young boys were negatively influenced by a culture that stifles masculinity.

In their exchange, Kirk responded thoughtfully to Abalaonye’s question, and they debated topics like the “infantilization of youth” and “toxic femininity,” which Abalaonye argued were consequences of “oppressive systems.”

Kirk’s assassin, Tyler Robinson, was arrested shortly after the shooting and faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder and obstruction of justice.

In a heartfelt message shared on Thanksgiving, Erica Kirk reflected on the loss of her husband, stating that he cherished the holiday for its focus on gratitude.

“Even amidst my pain, I hold on to that sense of gratitude,” she expressed. “I am grateful for my beautiful family, friends, and the outpouring of love from around the world.”
