Super PAC Faces Backlash Over Disingenuous Ads Against Mamdani

A prominent Super PAC, aiming to undermine mayoral frontrunner Zoran Mamdani, attempted to use stock photo models in advertisements designed to appear like everyday New Yorkers. However, these efforts were easily recognized, and the strategy raised eyebrows.

In their ads, the group showcased images of individuals who, while portrayed as local residents, have actually appeared in various other marketing campaigns. This approach sparked a bit of confusion among social media users, who were likely expecting authentic endorsements from genuine Democratic candidates.

“He seems promising, but Mamdani lacks real experience,” said Robinette, a 55-year-old from the Bronx featured in the ad. Interestingly, the same image of Robinette has been utilized for a website related to dementia care.

Another ad included comments from a 51-year-old woman from Chinatown, stating, “He’s a nice guy with a bad idea, so I won’t vote for Mamdani.” Yet, it’s worth noting that this same woman also features in different advertisements on the website.

This Super PAC receives support from well-known real estate moguls like Jeffrey Rev of Capitol Partners and Silverstein Properties. They’ve garnered around $2 million in donations since last October, but their efforts to influence public opinion seem to have fallen flat, particularly when criticizing progressive tax proposals and policies favored by some in Queens.

“Is this the best we can do? Using models to take down a candidate whom they fear might jeopardize the city?” questioned a Democratic operative in a conversation about the situation.

Meanwhile, candidate Andrew Cuomo has raised over $27 million since announcing his candidacy, encountering similar issues with campaign messaging.

Before the primary, Mamdani criticized a campaign mailer from the Bill Ackman Support Group that had been manipulated to create an unflattering image.

An August report from Citizens’ Union highlighted that most candidates supported by Super PACs did not win their races, despite a staggering $46 million being spent on major city contests.

“They didn’t succeed. In competitive races where Super PACs invested significantly, their preferred candidates often lost,” noted the report.

As Mamdani maintains a lead of over 20 points heading into the November general election, discussions about the authenticity and effectiveness of campaign spending have become increasingly relevant.

“After extensive planning and hefty financial backing from billionaires, is this really all they can muster—stock images and fake testimonials?” asked Pekec, emphasizing the impact of Mamdani’s grassroots movement.
