Padres Face Consequences After Wild Card Series Loss

The San Diego Padres are in hot water following their Game 3 defeat to the Chicago Cubs in the National League Wild Card Series.

Jose Iglesias received a one-game suspension and a fine for inappropriate behavior toward an umpire after the game, as reported. The Associated Press noted this incident happened as he was leaving the field after the loss.

Xander Bogaerts also found himself facing an undisclosed fine due to a controversial call in the ninth inning from home plate umpire DJ Rayburn that struck out him.

After Chicago won the game 3-1 at Wrigley Field, the Padres confronted the umpires while exiting through their dugout. The situation escalated during the last inning, particularly after Bogaerts received three strikes on a pitch that many thought was outside the strike zone.

Bogaerts initially argued with Rayburn, prompting Padres manager Mike Shildt to step in and attempt to calm things down, but tensions remained high even after the game ended.

Though the Padres managed to get two runners on base with one out, they could not capitalize, allowing the Cubs to advance to the National League Division Series.

In the aftermath, Bogaerts expressed his frustration, saying he was eager for upcoming MLB rule changes that could allow batters, pitchers, and catchers to take turns pitching. “What do you want me to do?” he said. “That was the ball. It ruined the whole game. Talking about it now won’t change anything. Thank goodness for ABS next year because this was just terrible.”
