MSNBC hosts Joy Reid and Jen Psaki agreed that if Democratic President Joe Biden recovers from COVID-19, he should “send the exact same message” as Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who survived Saturday’s assassination attempt and “will bounce back quickly and head straight to his party’s convention.”
Reid and Psaki took the stage Wednesday night during cable network MSNBC’s coverage of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Video Show “These are two senior citizens. Donald Trump is a senior citizen who, for some reason, was given nine seconds of his time,” Reid said. [an] “He did an iconic photo op in the middle of a mass shooting. It’s a bizarre situation. It will be explained. But the fact that he survived it and bounced back and went straight to the convention is being presented in the media as a sign of strength.”
Many commenters were stunned by the comparison between Biden’s presumed recovery from COVID-19 and Trump’s survival of an assassination attempt that left him with damaged ears.
Reade then turned her attention to Biden, who the White House said tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.
“The current president of the United States is 81 years old and has COVID-19,” Reid continued. “Wouldn’t that be the exact same thing if he recovered in a few days? I mean, he’s older than Trump and he’s tough enough to be infected with a disease that was once really deadly for someone his age. So if he recovers well and is able to come back and hold rallies, wouldn’t that be the exact same thing?”
“That’s how it should be,” Psaki responded, but Reid clarified that “it’s not exactly the same, it’s not the same incident. It’s just an older man recovering from an illness.” But Psaki repeated her point that “it should be the way it is.”
