Pakistan’s Defense Minister Issues Strong Warning to Taliban

On Wednesday, Pakistan’s defense minister made a bold statement, threatening to “annihilate” the Taliban after peace negotiations with the group fell through.

The recent talks held in Istanbul, Turkey, did not result in any viable agreement, according to Pakistan’s Information Minister Ataullah Tarar. This reflects the escalating violence along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, which has seen a significant increase in deaths this month—the worst since the Taliban regained control of Kabul in 2021.

The failure of talks was reportedly due to disagreements over accusations that terrorist organizations have been using Afghanistan as a launching pad for attacks against security forces in Pakistan.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated on a television program that Pakistan wouldn’t even need to utilize a small part of its military capabilities to completely dismantle the Taliban regime and force them into hiding.

Previously, a ceasefire was brokered in Doha, Qatar, on October 19, but subsequent discussions facilitated by Turkey and Qatar also resulted in no common ground being reached.

Both sides have exchanged blame for the unsuccessful negotiations. The information minister remarked that the Afghan representatives have not addressed the key issues that prompted the dialogue in the first place, accusing the Taliban of evasion and manipulation.

Pakistani sources noted that the Taliban has shown reluctance to control the Pakistani Taliban, which is a separate militant group that Pakistan claims operates independently within Afghanistan.

Talks reportedly ended amid tense exchanges, with Afghanistan contending that it lacks the ability to manage the Pakistani Taliban’s actions.

The Pakistani Taliban has ramped up assaults against Pakistani forces in recent weeks, particularly following airstrikes that targeted its leaders in various Afghan cities.

In response, the Taliban has been attacking military installations along the sprawling border, leaving tensions high. Last weekend, despite an agreement for a ceasefire, clashes resulted in the deaths of five Pakistani soldiers and 25 from the Pakistani Taliban.

Pakistan’s defense minister is adamant that while Afghanistan is interested in peace, any further breakdown in negotiations could lead to war.
