Panama remains steadfast on sanctions against Iran and Russia and ensuring maritime security.

The claim made on August 20th that “Panama, not President Panama, deserves sanctions” overlooks the strong security collaboration between Panama and the United States regarding Iran’s illicit oil sales.

This article fails to recognize the significant steps Panama has taken in support of international sanctions and maritime security. It’s simply untrue to say that Panama is attempting to evade these sanctions. In fact, our maritime authorities have removed over 650 ships from the registry since 2019, including 214 just in the past year.

Recently, we delisted 17 ships specifically to comply with new US sanctions related to transporting Iranian oil. These actions demonstrate our commitment to a strict zero-tolerance policy against improper flag use.

This month, Panama enacted a ban on registering oil tankers and bulk carriers older than 15 years, targeting the “shadow fleet” involved in the illegal oil trade with Iran and Russia. We’ve also enhanced our due diligence protocols to align with the highest international standards.

Our registry has acted swiftly in decommissioning vessels flagged for activities subject to sanctions, reinforcing our commitment to transparency and international collaboration. We are the Ministry of Finance and Foreign Asset Management Bureau. Unity regarding nuclear Iran does not represent a valid authority in the United States.

Panama has supported the division of Palestinian territory and endorsed the establishment of an Israeli state, voting for its recognition in the United Nations. Around 15,000 Jews reside in Panama, freely practicing their faith in 10 synagogues around the country. Two Jewish individuals have served in the presidential office. Panama does not recognize the Palestinian state.

During its term on the Security Council from 2025-2026, Panama has advocated for a balanced and principled stance since October 7th, acknowledging the legal suffering of Israeli citizens and the families of hostages. Panama has also criticized Hamas for its role in the October 7th attacks and has called for the unconditional release of hostages.

To suggest that Panama should be criticized, despite its active commitment to the international order, undermines the unity needed to tackle global issues effectively.
