Concerns Over Trump’s Remarks on Intelligence Community
Former CIA director Leon Panetta has expressed alarm regarding President Trump’s recent comments that seem to cast doubt on the intelligence community, particularly in relation to military actions against Iran. He described such rhetoric as “very scary.”
Panetta emphasized that these statements undermine the efforts of intelligence professionals who strive to present the president with accurate information. He noted, “When the president questions their credibility, it certainly damages their morale, I’m sure.”
He also pointed out potential consequences for Trump’s decision-making, stating, “If he rejects the intelligence he receives, what is the basis for his decision-making in the future? That is a very frightening prospect.”
Recently, Trump dismissed National Intelligence Director Tarsi Gabbard’s assessment regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities amid heightened tensions during an Israeli military conflict, especially following U.S. airstrikes on several Iranian nuclear sites.
“Well, then my intelligence reporting community is wrong,” Trump remarked when asked about Gabbard’s views, which indicated Iran was not pursuing nuclear weapons.
In response to the president’s comments, Gabbard later adjusted her stance, suggesting that the U.S. intelligence indicates Iran could produce nuclear weapons within a short timeframe if they chose to proceed.
Panetta accused the Trump administration of rejecting critical intelligence assessments following the strikes on Iran. He stated, “When the U.S. president claims our information assessment is flawed and that there is a lack of belief in our own intelligence, it creates a very dangerous situation.”
Reflecting on U.S. leadership in a volatile world, Panetta remarked, “I’ve always had confidence in our intelligence regarding Iran.” He raised questions about whether Iran has made any decisions about advancing its nuclear capabilities, suggesting that current intelligence does not indicate that they have.
The White House has not yet responded to requests for comments on these remarks.
