Panthers executive suspended by NHL for argument with fan on social media about Israel

NHL Suspends Florida Panthers Owners Over Social Media Dispute

The NHL announced on Tuesday that a few Florida Panthers owners have faced suspension due to their activities on social media.

The incident started with a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, which escalated into a discussion about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. One of the owners referred to Canada somewhat dismissively as “the fifth province.”

Currently, the Panthers and the Leafs are in the midst of the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The series has been quite intense, featuring aggressive moments, including a notable hit from Leafs goalkeeper Anthony Slolarz on Sam Bennett. There’s also been some unexpected drama; a player named Stratz fell ill on the bench and has been absent since then.

A fan on X, known as “Dr. Grizzo,” engaged in the online discourse.

The owner replied, seemingly dismissing the fan’s concerns, stating, “In reality, being a whining anti-woman is clearly worse. A loser.”

This back-and-forth highlights the increased tensions surrounding the series, which is certainly palpable among fans.

Later in the exchange, the fan questioned whether calling out this behavior made them biased, adding further fuel to the debate.

In a fiery counter, CIFU—one of the owners—responded with a harsh criticism, leading to him later making his account private and deactivating it.

CIFU issued an apology stating, “Two days ago I posted a disappointing and inflammatory comment on social media. My actions do not reflect the standards of the Florida Panthers Organization and the Viola Family. I sincerely apologize to all those affected by my comments. I am committed to working with the NHL to correct my actions.”

The series stands tied ahead of Game 5 in Toronto on Wednesday night, heightening the stakes as the playoffs progress.
