California Parents Sentenced for Murder of Their Children
In a tragic case, two parents from California received multiple life sentences on Monday for the horrific murder of their 13-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son. They were also found guilty of forcing their younger children to witness the aftermath.
Maurice Jewell Taylor Sr., aged 39, and Natalie Sumiko Brothwell, aged 49, were convicted in November of first-degree murder with special circumstances after the brutal slayings of their children, Mariaka and Maurice, on November 29, 2020, inside their home in Lancaster.
Following the murders, the couple compelled their two youngest sons, who are 8 and 9 years old, to look at their brother’s decapitated remains and kept them confined to a bedroom without food for several days.
It was only five days later that firefighters discovered the siblings’ remains while responding to a potential gas leak, as reported.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office indicated that Taylor and Brothwell both received maximum sentences, including two consecutive life terms without parole and an additional six years in state prison.
After the verdict, District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman described the killings as “a heinous act of brutality,” highlighting the horror that the surviving siblings experienced.
The younger children have since been placed under a 10-year protection order to ensure their safety.
This case serves as a chilling reminder of the impact of such violence, not only on the victims but also on those who are left to deal with the aftermath.
