Parents Sentenced to Life for Horrific Murders
On Monday, a couple from California received life sentences for the brutal killing of their two older children, forcing their younger siblings to witness the aftermath. Maurice Jewell Taylor Sr., 39, and Natalie Sumiko Brothwell, 49, were each handed down life terms along with six additional years without the chance for parole.
In November, they were found guilty of first-degree murder for the tragic deaths of 12-year-old Maurice and 13-year-old Mariaka. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the jury also acknowledged special circumstances due to multiple murders.
A 10-year protective order has been enacted for the surviving victim, as reported by CBS News.
Alongside the murder charges, the pair was also found guilty of child abuse. It’s alleged they forced their eight- and nine-year-old boys to look at the decapitated bodies of their siblings. Prosecutors claimed the children were confined in a room for days without food.
During the trial, Broswell maintained her innocence, insisting she was attempting to save the kids. Judge Lisa M. Strassner admonished her for showing a lack of “genuine remorse,” noting the absence of accountability during the proceedings.
The horrific scene only came to light when firefighters arrived at the home to investigate a gas leak, leading to the grim discovery.
The children’s maternal grandmother placed responsibility on Taylor in court, claiming he “ruined so many lives,” while she expressed belief in Broswell’s innocence.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hockman previously voiced his concern over the barbaric nature of the crime. “This was an extremely cruel act that shattered an entire family,” he stated after the verdict. “Two innocent children were brutally murdered, leaving their young siblings to experience unimaginable horror.”
The judge denied a motion for a new trial, asserting that the jury’s verdict was “fully supported by the evidence.”
