Australian water polo player in quarantine after contracting coronavirus
An Australian water polo player is in isolation at the Paris Games after testing positive for COVID-19, Australian Olympic team chief Anna Mears said.
Mears added that the player’s close contacts, whom he did not name, were being monitored and tested but the full squad would train as scheduled.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were postponed by a year because of the pandemic and took place largely without spectators.
“Two water polo players were scheduled to travel with us, but last night they tested positive for COVID-19 and one player on our team is currently in quarantine,” Mears said at a news conference. “So as a precaution they will not be traveling this morning.”
“We want to stress that we are treating COVID-19 in no way like any other disease, such as the flu. This is not Tokyo. The players are not particularly unwell, they are continuing to train, but they are just sleeping in one room.”
Mears said the players’ teammates will wear masks and adhere to social distancing measures.
“It was late last night when she first developed symptoms and we are fortunate to have our own testing equipment which allows us to get information very quickly and intervene to both diagnose and treat,” Mr Mears added.
“As far as competing, we will wait until we have received information from Chief Medical Officer Carolyn Broderick that it is entirely safe for her to do so.”
French Health Minister Frederic Valletout said there was no risk of a large cluster of coronavirus cases in France.
“Of course, COVID is here. We appear to have had a small peak in cases,” he said, “but we’re a long way from what we saw in 2020, 2021 and 2022.”
He added that wearing masks will not be mandatory as the number of infections is still low. “Some precautions are being taken, but it’s up to the organizers because the level of COVID-19 spread is very low,” he said. (Reuters)
