Tragic Incident Claims Life of Climbing Ranger on Mount McKinley

A seasonal climbing ranger died on Thursday afternoon after falling into a crevasse while on duty on Mount McKinley, marking yet another tragic event on this perilous Alaskan peak.

The ranger has been identified as Robin Pendary from Enumclaw, Washington, according to a statement from the National Park Service (NPS).

Officials reported that Pendary was part of a mountain climbing patrol when he fell near a camp situated at an altitude of 14,000 feet around 2 p.m. local time. Earlier, the park communicated that Pendary had been actively engaged in operations at the 14,200-foot camp alongside another ranger.

NPS personnel promptly initiated rescue efforts; however, Pendary did not survive the fall. The exact details surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.

Heartbroken by the loss, Denali National Park Superintendent Brooke Merrell expressed condolences, stating, “We are heartbroken by the loss of a member of our Denali family. Our climbing rangers are dedicated to serving visitors and helping others in one of the world’s most challenging environments. Today we mourn the loss of a valued colleague, friend, and teammate.”

Pendary had been a seasonal climbing ranger at Denali National Park and Preserve since 2024, concentrating on emergency response, climber safety, and high-altitude activities.

This incident follows another recent tragedy that resulted in the deaths of three climbers from Latvia. Just last week, four climbers from that expedition encountered a fatal accident near Denali Pass, a notoriously dangerous area of the mountain.

Rescuers faced considerable challenges; a longline helicopter was deployed to extract survivors from an area at an altitude of 17,200 feet due to harsh weather and difficult terrain, which made standard landing impossible.

Denali, towering at 20,310 feet above sea level, is regarded as one of North America’s toughest climbs, with only about 1,000 to 1,200 climbers attempting the summit annually, mainly during the peak season in May and June. Last year, less than half of those challengers reached the top.

Throughout the history of the park, over 130 individuals have tragically lost their lives on this mountain.
