Paroled sex offender who raped and killed a woman he put in a tote bag receives sentence

Long Sentences for Convicted Sex Offender After Violent Murder

Decades of prison sentences were handed down to convicted sex offenders for the brutal rape, beating, and murder of women in Colorado. Judges criticized the judicial system, arguing it failed to keep violent criminals incarcerated.

Gregory Alan Whitmore, 42, has been sentenced to 70 years in prison for the suffocation of 27-year-old Allison Scarfon during an attack in October 2022. According to the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, he choked her during the assault.

At the time of the attack, Whitmore was on parole for a prior sexual assault conviction. He had previously received a 10-year probation sentence, but after violating it, he served five years in prison starting in 2017.

“Allison Scarfon deserved a long and fulfilling life, but instead, she fell victim to a violent sex offender who should have been serving time,” a prosecutor commented. There’s a sense that the justice system must improve to shield the community from individuals like this. The idea is that any convicted violent sex offender needs to be kept away from society for much longer than just five years.

It’s worth noting how, alarmingly, Whitmore encountered Scarfon shortly after being released on parole. Reports reveal that the confrontation escalated when she confronted him about his past as a rapist.

After their exchange, he strangled and suffocated her, then concealed her body in a black plastic bag in a garage within hours, according to what prosecutors shared.

Whitmore ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault.
