Update on the Murder of Jamie Carney

Reports indicate that Jamie Carney’s boyfriend, who fled Ireland following her tragic murder, had previously been denied asylum in the country.

The recent murder of Jamie Carney, a mother who relocated from New York to Killarney nearly five years ago, has left Ireland in shock. The details surrounding her death have been particularly harrowing.

As per reports, Carney, 43, died from asphyxiation and had sustained head injuries during the attack. Irish authorities are actively searching for Ahmad Al Saqar, a person of interest connected to Carney before her death. The two allegedly crossed paths at a pro-Palestinian protest in Ireland about 18 months ago.

It has been shared by some news outlets that Al Saqar had sought asylum in Ireland but was denied. However, he remains legally in the country while appealing this decision.

Gardaí believe that Al Saqar had been staying in Ireland for the last two years, including a recent period at Carney’s residence in Killarney.

After Carney’s death, Al Saqar reportedly fled to Türkiye, raising concerns that he might have already returned to Jordan, which lacks an extradition agreement with Ireland.

The Irish police are collaborating with Europol and Interpol to track his movements through Turkish authorities.

Before her death, Carney had posted on Instagram about her relationship with Al Saqar, expressing her experiences dating someone from Jordan. In a recent post, she shared a picture of them together in Jordan with a hopeful caption about returning soon.

Some social media discussions have framed her death as an instance of “suicidal empathy,” a term reflecting excessive compassion that can lead to exploitation. There are worries that this tragedy could be misused by far-right groups in the U.S. to fuel racial tensions.

The topic of immigration is becoming increasingly contentious in Ireland, with growing public scrutiny as more than 20% of the population is now foreign-born. Protests have been erupting outside places designated for asylum seekers.

Local officials, including Killarney’s Mayor John O’Donoghue, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the impact on the community. Another local councilor noted the community’s shock and disappointment regarding such a tragic event affecting one of their own.
