Pastor from German State Media Claims Those Supporting Kirk Are Like the 'Devil'

Media Critique of Charlie Kirk Portrayal

A German state media pastor has drawn a comparison between the negative representation of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and the “devil.” Following the recent assassination of the conservative activist at Utah Valley University, German media has been saturated with criticism, often depicting the 31-year-old advocate for free speech unfavorably. For instance, ZDF, a public broadcaster, has labeled Kirk’s views as “racist” and “alarming.”

This biased portrayal has sparked considerable backlash, both within Germany and beyond. Additionally, there are concerns that the ZDF journalist Elmer Teben could face visa revocation in the U.S.

Instead of condemning the media for spreading such blatant misinterpretations, the well-known Protestant pastor Annette Behnken urged a focus on those criticizing the media after Kirk’s death.

Behnken, who hosts Wort Zum Sonntag, a Christian series on ARD Public Television, expressed her dismay by stating that the world is rife with “poison.” According to her, this poison manifests in everyday situations as “hatred, incitement, and lies.”

She added that one example of this poison is how a “radical racist on the right” is belittled as merely a conservative who has influenced young minds. Behnken further noted, “It’s becoming even more absurd; merely stating facts results in accusations that somehow justify murder. It’s a total distortion—Diabolos, as the Bible refers to the devil.”

The heated rhetoric aimed at Kirk was notably absent from the ARD’s Sunday radio programming. German news magazine Der Spiegel even characterized a memorial for Kirk as a “funeral for right-wing extremists.”

Simultaneously, Bibiana Barth, a presenter on Public Tagesschau 24, insinuated that Kirk should bear some responsibility for his own death due to his stance on U.S. gun rights.

In response to this negative coverage, former U.S. ambassador Richard Grenell remarked that European media has been misleading the public for years through left-leaning narratives. He called for Europeans to awake and challenge the prevailing biases.

Columnist Harald Martenstein from Diewelt condemned the media’s reporting on Kirk’s murder, stating, “The assassination of Charlie Kirk reveals a disturbing moral decline among some left-leaning journalists who spread falsehoods to rationalize the crime.” He criticized those who can’t put aside political disagreements, even in the face of death, remarking that Kirk faced violent fantasies due to his views on the LGBTQ+ community.
