Patricia Heaton urges the left to reduce their harsh language following the WHCA shooting

Patricia Heaton is urging her “friends on the left” to dial back their intense political language in the aftermath of a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

During the event, held at the Washington Hilton, President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, first lady Melania Trump, and other high-ranking officials were evacuated after gunfire erupted nearby. The shooter was arrested following a brief standoff with Secret Service agents in the lobby.

Attendees scrambled for safety, hiding under tables and in the ballroom, which led to the event’s postponement.

The day after the incident, Heaton, aged 68, took to X to express that while she disagrees with Democratic presidents like Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden, she believes it’s crucial to avoid extremist language when discussing political figures. She stated, “I wasn’t pleased with their victories, but I never labeled them fascists or threats to democracy, nor did I wish harm upon them. I simply moved forward with gratitude. Friends on the left, maybe you could consider doing the same. It might improve your life and the health of our country.”

On Sunday, a federal law enforcement official confirmed that the suspect indicated a desire to target Trump administration officials. Identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen from Torrance, California, authorities noted that he had created a manifesto with anti-Trump and anti-Christian sentiments, which he shared on social media.

Reportedly, Allen entered a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton armed and opened fire, injuring a Secret Service agent. The agent fired back, incapacitating Allen. Both the suspect and the injured officer were taken to the hospital, with the officer expected to recover fully.

This incident adds to an alarming trend of threats directed at Trump, including previously confirmed assassination attempts and a recent armed incident at Mar-a-Lago.

The White House later disclosed that Allen’s brother had alerted authorities in New London, Connecticut, prior to the shooting about a document that allegedly included his brother’s intentions to target administration officials.

Allen’s social media history pointed to extremist views, and his sister, Abrianna Allen, noted that he had been making radical statements and often spoke about taking action to change the world.

Heaton has previously criticized the toxic political atmosphere, especially following Charlie Kirk’s assassination in September 2025, labeling it as moral hypocrisy to celebrate or mock such violence online. She expressed her discontent regarding the violent rhetoric often used by people who preach kindness.

After the 2024 presidential election, Heaton condemned political commentators for inciting fear and insulting voters, arguing that they misrepresented Trump as a threat to people’s way of life. She called out those who target vulnerable groups and emphasized the need to treat differing opinions with respect rather than disdain.
