In a deeply emotional interview with “60 Minutes,” Patrick Clancy shared that his ex-wife, Lindsay Clancy, never sought his forgiveness after she took the lives of their three children, yet he says he “gave it to her” anyway.
During this first public interview since her recent mistrial, CBS correspondent Ross Douthat asked Patrick, “Has she ever asked for your forgiveness?” He replied, “No. But I gave it to her.”
In January 2023, Lindsay Clancy strangled their three children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan—using exercise bands in their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, before attempting to take her own life.
To many people’s surprise, Patrick expressed that he forgave his wife almost immediately for the tragic loss of their children.
“I saw those headlines calling her ‘Killer Mom’ and ‘Monster,’ but I don’t think those descriptions fit. I believe her actions were a consequence of her mental illness. So I felt it was important to express my forgiveness,” he explained.
He added, “I think if I didn’t reach that point of forgiveness, it would consume me from the inside.”
Reflecting on Lindsay’s declining mental state, Patrick recalled that he witnessed her struggles begin in fall 2022 when their youngest, Callan, was just an infant.
“In October, she started having sleepless nights,” he told Douthat.
Lindsay’s mental health worsened over time, leading to multiple emergency room trips and her eventual admission to a program for postpartum depression. Despite a regimen of medications, her situation did not improve.
“By December, she was really struggling—extremely sleep-deprived, battling deep depression, and experiencing intrusive thoughts. At the end of that month, she ended up in the hospital,” he recounted.
Patrick admitted he didn’t know much about postpartum mental health issues at the time. “I think mental illness can be extremely misleading. There were definitely signs I likely missed,” he said when speaking about his earlier awareness of postpartum challenges.
Updates on Lindsay Clancy’s Murder Trial
Just seventeen days after checking into McLean Psychiatric Hospital, Lindsay Clancy committed the heinous act against their children and then harmed herself before jumping from a second-story window.
Patrick hauntingly remembered finding her partially paralyzed in their yard after the failed suicide attempt when he testified in court last July.
During his testimony, he described experiencing a “massive traumatic panic attack” upon hearing the 911 call recording from the night he discovered his children in the basement.
“Before they played the call, I stepped away because I knew it would be horrific. In the back room, I was hit with this panic attack,” he revealed. “My heart was racing. They offered me medication in the ambulance, but I turned it down. I wanted to finish my testimony to move forward.”
He expressed feeling that he did his best to support Lindsay during her mental health crisis leading up to the tragic events.
“I think I did the best I could with the knowledge I had. I live with the consequences of those events every day,” he stated.
Patrick’s appearance on “60 Minutes,” alongside his new partner, fertility doctor Rachel Danis, follows Lindsay Clancy’s murder case ending in a mistrial, caused by one juror’s refusal to find her not guilty by reason of insanity, despite the majority of jurors recognizing her mental health struggles.
On a brighter note, the couple also disclosed that they’re starting a family together.
