Former Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-Iowa) has endorsed President Biden for the White House, over a third-party bid by his cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Kennedy, a mental health advocate, appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday to talk about his new book, “Courageous Profiles in Mental Health.” He said Biden is “the best president we’ve ever had on mental health.”
“And frankly, he’s also put the most money into community mental health across the country. So there’s no choice other than Joe Biden. If you care about this addiction crisis and this mental health crisis, Joe Biden is your candidate,” he added.
When co-host Dana Bash pointed out that his comments sounded like an endorsement, Kennedy acknowledged that they were.
“Absolutely. He’s the best and he knows the issues. You know, it’s affected him personally. I think all Americans can relate to what it’s like for Joe Biden because we’re all going through similar situations,” he said.
He also said he was “worried” that former President Trump would be elected, calling him a threat to democracy.
“We need everyone to go out and vote for Joe Biden and vote for democracy over tyranny,” he added.
The former congressman served in Congress from 1995 to 2011, and now works to help people with addiction and mental health issues through the Kennedy Forum.
More than a dozen Kennedy family members have already endorsed Biden for reelection last month, voicing their opposition to the independent candidacy of their elder brother, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Kerry Kennedy, the independent candidate’s youngest sister, said last month that Biden “was a champion for all the rights and freedoms that my father and uncles stood for.”
