Patriots defensive lineman Christian Barmore apologized to Providence police on Saturday after accusing officers of racism in a now-deleted X post following a traffic stop earlier in the week.
“In the few days since my incident with the Providence Police Department, I have had the opportunity to reflect on my actions,” Barmore wrote to X. my actions. I apologize to the Providence Police Department, my teammates, and my family.
“My mother was a police officer, so I understand the pressures that come with their jobs. Reacting the way I did didn't make it any easier.”
Barmore was not arrested during the traffic stop, but was reportedly pulled over around 1 a.m. Wednesday and given a citation for expired registration, unregistered vehicle, and a “license plate display penalty.” According to Boston 25.
But before officers could reach his car, he reacted with “attitude” and was making a “slow sway,” according to Boston 25.
The latter's reaction led officers to believe he might be hiding contraband or weapons “before officers arrived at the counter,” the newspaper reported.
Body camera footage shows Barmore threatening to “touch me'' and suing the officers after being told he needed to get out of his car and that it would be towed.
“I am using this as an opportunity to learn and do better. I have already met with members of the Providence Police Department and apologized in person, and I hope they accept my sincere apology. That encounter was just the first of many steps I would take on my path to self-improvement.”
Barmore has yet to play for the Patriots in 2024 after being hospitalized with a blood clot in July, but head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters the team's second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is a “progress.” He said there is a high possibility of his return. This year has been better than I originally expected after my diagnosis. According to CBS Boston.
He had a career-high 8.5 sacks last year, and also had career-highs in quarterback hits (16) and tackles for loss (13).
