Drake May is a franchise quarterback for the New England Patriots, but Joe Milton III sits behind him with his arms and a rocket of many attractive intangible assets.
For other teams throughout the league desperate for quarterbacks, they may find the Patriots shopping for Milton while investing in Mai's future.
“What I reported at the Senior Bowl and it's not like a broken news sounder or anything like that, but the chatter from the All-Star Circuit was that the Patriots were messing around with the idea of making Joe Milton available, both in the East and West and in the Senior Bowl.” Boston Sports Journal's Greg A. Bedard reported on Tuesday.
“If people call, I'm sure they're calling,” Bedard added. “I think it's wise.”
May was drafted third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Patriots. They added Milton to the quarterback room in the sixth round.
Before the NFL, Milton spent Three seasons in Michigan and three seasons in Tennessee. He never took away his potential in Wolverine. He threw five touchdowns and six intercepts in his time in Ann Arbor before blossoming with the volunteers and throwing 32 touchdowns for five intercepts.
Milton's college career was defined by the bazooka of his arm. Combining it with his size – he's 6 feet five pounds and 246 pounds – and athleticism has had great hopes for Milton for many years.
He received New England's only opportunity in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bill and made the most of it.
Milton passed 29 for 22 yards, 29 passes without touchdowns and no interceptions, but also added a rush score. The flash of light he showed towards the victory of the Patriots certainly opened some eyes.
Even the Patriot owners were impressed by Robert Craft.
“We seemed lucky.” Craft said. “I think there are probably two quarterbacks.”
Milton's trade value may not be that high as he is not younger and is not able to see more play time to prove himself even further.
Milton turns 25 on March 6th, and the one-game sample size combined with his intriguing rise could make the team want to pull the trigger on a contract to win him. And New England may fantasize about ideas.
