Following the Los Angeles Lakers’ struggles in the NBA playoffs, former Celtics star Paul Pierce has suggested that it may be time for both the team and LeBron James to part ways.
“If the Lakers are aiming to regain their status as championship contenders, it’s essential to move beyond the LeBron era,” Pierce remarked during an appearance on FS1’s “Speak.”
He added, “LeBron has a considerable influence over the organization, and while he has greatly contributed, perhaps it’s time to say, ‘Thank you for your service, but we need to move forward.’ It’s a difficult conversation.”
Pierce’s comments come in the wake of the Lakers’ early exit from the playoffs after losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves, marking a rocky start for rookie coach JJ Redick. This raises questions about the team’s future, especially after trading Anthony Davis for Luka Dončić.
In the postseason, James and Dončić struggled against the younger and more athletic Timberwolves.
James, at 40, has stated he intends to play at least one more season, which adds another layer to the ongoing speculation.
Meanwhile, his son Bronnie was part of the Lakers’ roster for much of this past season.
In the competitive Western Conference, even pairing James with Dončić doesn’t ensure success. Many are wondering when Dončić might fully take over as the franchise’s face, especially after James eventually steps back.
