Pay attention, America: What you’ve been told about Canada isn’t true

Canada often flies under the radar for most Americans, appearing in conversations mainly during hockey season or when celebrities make bold claims.

Recently, though, Canada has garnered attention in the U.S. Why? It’s all about President Trump’s interest in making Canada the 51st state. With Justin Trudeau no longer in charge and Mark Carney—a well-educated globalist—is now leading, it’s worth exploring what might happen if Canada really joins the U.S.

As a Canadian, I want to clear up some misconceptions and myths.

Myth: Canada is overwhelmingly liberal!

There’s a perception that Canada is left-leaning, even suggesting that U.S. Democrats are more conservative than Canada’s Conservatives. Many believe political parties here don’t significantly oppose issues like abortion and same-sex marriage.

Fact: Canada embraces diverse views!

For starters, Canada’s political scene includes the New Democrats (definitely on the far left), the Liberal Party (more socially liberal), the Conservatives (centrist), the People’s Party (right-leaning libertarians), among others. And there are a bunch of smaller parties too! This variety includes groups like the Communist Party and various activist parties.

Admittedly, most Canadians might lean left, which can make it feel like writing here is a one-sided affair. However, if you have a differing opinion, feel free to share it with us—as long as it eventually aligns! As Canadians, we are, perhaps ironically, puzzled by political tensions in the U.S. We’re all about inclusivity unless, of course, you want to restrict abortion or limit gender expression.

Myth: Canada is inundated with immigrants!

Some claim Canada is overflowing with immigrants who don’t speak English, comparing major cities to places in India or China.

Fact: Canada thrives on diversity!

This idea that there are “too many” immigrants in Canada is just not true. An estimated 23% of the population consists of immigrants, which enriches the culture. Sure, it can be jarring to encounter people who communicate in different languages, but that’s the essence of multiculturalism!

I mean, traveling through smaller towns or bustling cities makes you feel like you are experiencing a global village. We’ve brought in around 1.2 million new Canadians in just 2023, contributing to a 3.2% population increase. Some worry we might be facing a “Population Trap,” where rising housing costs and essentials make life tough.

Myth: Canadians are overly polite and boring!

Canadians have a reputation for excessive politeness, often saying “sorry.” Many talented musicians and artists felt they had to move to the U.S. to escape regulatory issues that stifle creativity here.

Fact: Canada is fun and laid-back!

So, do you really think Canadians are just polite? Not quite! In the spirit of laughter, if comedians like Jim Carrey are any indication, there’s a lot more here. You might catch a thrilling show or share a drink in a Tim Hortons, discussing everything from politics to sports!

Myth: Canada restricts freedom of speech!

It’s true that Canada has laws governing speech and online activities, much like other developed nations. Some argue the government took measures against those hesitant about Covid vaccines, even facing backlash from major publications.

Fact: Such claims can be harmful!

Amid regulatory changes introduced under former Prime Minister Trudeau, Canadians have pathways to address vaccination status and regain their digital rights.
