Job openings for positions based in Antarctica are attracting attention.
The British Antarctic Heritage Trust is hiring five people to work at the world’s southernmost post office in Antarctica for five months. This includes people sorting mail and counting the number of penguins in the area.
“From counting penguins to sorting mail at the world’s southernmost post office, the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) posted on its Instagram page on February 26th that “Working in Port Lockroy is a job like no other.”

UKAHT is recruiting for a base leader, one shop manager and three general assistants. All live in the “remote but busy” location of Portlockroy in Antarctica.
Port Lockroy is located on Goudier Island. According to the UKAHT website, it receives up to 18,000 cruise ship visitors, making it one of the most visited sites in Antarctica.

Base A at Portlockroy was established in 1944 and then closed in 1962, its website states, adding: “The abandoned base is recognized for its historical importance and contribution to British science. It was not demolished because it was given the status of historic site and monument. (HSM) No. 61 under the Antarctic Treaty. ”
In 1996, the Port Lockroy building became a ‘living museum’, open during the Antarctic summer season.

According to its website, UKAHT took control of Port Lockroy in 2006.
Those hired to work at Port Lockroy are responsible for “running a charity gift shop, fundraising, running the British Antarctic Territory Post Office, annual maintenance of historic buildings and artifacts, wildlife viewing, He will be tasked with many other diverse and difficult tasks. It is listed on the UKAHT website.

According to the website, the term of office for this position is from November 2024 to March 2025.
Since it’s actually summer in Antarctica, temperatures hover between about 20 degrees Fahrenheit and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, but mostly stay below freezing.
The largest penguin in history was the “Monster Bird,” which weighed over 300 pounds.
UKAHT said that despite relatively mild temperatures (for Antarctica), working at Port Lockroy was not for the faint of heart.
There is no running water, nor are there showers or flush toilets.
Power is limited and there is no cell phone service at all.

The website says “limited internet” is available via Starlink.
Medical evacuations can take up to a week, depending on weather, and the closest hospitals are in Argentina.
One of the duties for the role available at Portlockroy is “monitoring penguins, wildlife and the environment on behalf of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS)”.
The person hired will be required to provide up-to-date information on the status of the island’s gentoo penguin population.
“Training will be provided and a written report will be required at the end of the season,” the website states.

The recruits will also be tasked with maintaining a blog on the UKAHT website about happenings at Port Lockroy, including updates on the island’s gentoo penguin population.

Applications are due by March 18 for five available positions in Portlockroy. Applicants must be resident and authorized to work in the UK.
