Penn State athletic director talks about the choice to dismiss head football coach James Franklin

Penn State Football Coach James Franklin Fired After Loss

Penn State’s athletic director, Pat Kraft, recently made the tough call to let go of head football coach James Franklin. While it seems the catalyst was the team’s three consecutive losses, Kraft indicated that this decision involved deeper considerations.

The news of Franklin’s exit has sent ripples across the college football community. Franklin, who has been with the Nittany Lions since 2014, leaves the program after the university paid a hefty $50 million buyout.

“Everything is on the table,” Kraft remarked after the team’s narrow defeat to Northwestern over the weekend.

After reflecting on the team’s trajectory and the welfare of the athletes, Kraft expressed that a difficult decision had to be made. “We felt like we had to make a difficult decision,” he explained, citing both the current state of the program and future aspirations. It was evident to Kraft that a change was necessary.

The Penn State program was initially ranked No. 2 in the nation at the season’s outset. They secured a win in their first game but have faced challenges ever since. The loss against the unranked Northwestern was particularly painful, with fans growing increasingly vocal about their dissatisfaction and calling for Franklin’s dismissal.

Franklin’s firing is complicated by a personal and professional connection he shares with Kraft, making the situation even more poignant. “James Franklin is a good friend who has always conducted himself with dignity,” Kraft said. “We are all fortunate to have had him lead this program for more than a decade, and we wish him and his family the best.”

As the program transitions, interim head coach Terry Smith, who has been an assistant under Franklin, will take the reins. Franklin joined Penn State after a successful run at Vanderbilt and has a notable record of 104-45 during his tenure. He even guided the team to the College Football Playoff semifinals last season.

Looking forward, Penn State will be without quarterback Drew Allard for the rest of the season due to a foot injury he sustained during the Northwestern game. Upcoming matches against Iowa State and challenging opponents like No. 1 Ohio State and No. 7 Indiana State will test the team’s resilience, especially if they hope to remain in contention for the College Football Playoff.
