Pennsylvania Gov. Shapiro hits CNN for not calling out Trump’s ‘lies’ during debate with Biden

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on Friday criticized CNN for failing to correct comments made by former President Trump during his debate with President Biden.

“Frankly, CNN could have done a better job reporting this. [Trump’s] “That’s a lie,” said Shapiro, who some columnists have named as a leading candidate to succeed Biden.

“Joe Biden had a bad debate, but Donald Trump is a bad president,” Shapiro told CNN. “I’ll be the first to admit that I was not impressed with last night’s debate.”

CNN host John Berman asked Shapiro whether Biden was “capable” of leading a campaign to defeat Trump in November.

“Yes,” Shapiro said, “we certainly need to get our message across more clearly, and the president has a responsibility to do that with all of us.”

“Has the Biden campaign explained to you what happened and why it happened?” Berman asked.

“Well, I think the Biden team should speak for itself,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro also declined to discuss with Berman whether he could replace Biden as the Democratic nominee.

“Do you think you can beat Donald Trump in the general election?” Berman asked Shapiro.

“I’m not going to engage with that assumption,” the governor responded. “I’m fully committed.”

Shapiro also declined to tell Berman the exact messages he received from friends and aides in response to Biden’s debate performance.

“The bottom line is, there is a clear contrast in this race, we have a responsibility to build a case against Donald Trump, and now is the time to stop worrying and start working, not worrying,” the governor told Berman.

A CNN poll released during the broadcast found that 67% of debate viewers felt Trump won the debate, while 33% thought Biden won.
