Pennsylvania governor race takes shape as Shapiro and Garrity secure primary nominations

Gubernatorial Race in Pennsylvania

The gubernatorial race in Pennsylvania is shaping up to be a significant political event, featuring Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro against Republican State Treasurer Stacey Garrity.

Both candidates were running unopposed in their respective party primaries on Tuesday, vying for the gubernatorial nominations.

Shapiro, a prominent name who has his sights set on the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, is focused on his reelection for 2026. This year’s election is particularly important as it will involve key legislative races that may determine if Democrats can reclaim the House majority.

In a speech addressed to supporters, Shapiro emphasized unity during these divisive times, stating, “We have shown that we can get things done in a way that honors all Pennsylvanians, no matter what they look like, where they come from, who they love, who they pray to or who they don’t pray to.”

He highlighted several accomplishments during his administration, such as a 30% increase in public education funding and the creation of nearly 23,000 jobs after acquiring an electric utility company aimed at reducing energy costs.

However, Garrity countered his claims by pointing out the state’s economic standing. “As a result of the failures of the Josh Shapiro administration, Pennsylvania currently ranks 38th economically, 39th in education, and 41st overall,” she remarked. She noted that nearly 70% of eighth graders in Pennsylvania are not reading at grade level and criticized the state for overspending by $5 billion.

Shapiro, in response, linked Garrity to former President Donald Trump, asserting she is prioritizing loyalty to him over the needs of the state. “My opponent has complete and utter loyalty to Donald Trump because she is more focused on serving him than fighting for you guys,” he said. “She proudly wears a MAGA hat while I wear a Pennsylvania jersey.”

Both candidates are actively campaigning despite the lack of opposition in the primaries. Garrity has been touring the state to boost her visibility and to support her running mate, Jason Ritchie, who is facing a challenge in the lieutenant governor primary.

Meanwhile, Shapiro is also rallying support for congressional candidates involved in competitive Democratic primaries across the state.
