New Tax Filing Option for Pennsylvanians

There are several ways to file taxes, and some of them are even free.

Pennsylvania residents now have another choice that aims to simplify the process even further.

According to a recent press release from the state Department of Revenue, Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration has launched a new initiative called Fast File. This program is intended to offer a straightforward and cost-free method for certain individuals to submit their PA Individual Income Tax Return (PA-40) this tax season.

Eligible taxpayers can access the Fast File program via the myPATH online system.

The press release emphasizes that one of the key goals of this initiative is to persuade Pennsylvanians who typically submit paper returns to switch to online filing. Transitioning more submissions online is expected to shorten processing times, lower taxpayer costs, enhance the Department’s efficiency, and ultimately save money for the taxpayers.

Fast File is designed for:

  • Single taxpayers who were full-time residents of Pennsylvania last year.
  • Individuals who had only one source of W-2 income from the same employer during the previous year.
  • Taxpayers whose employers have provided W-2 forms to the Department of Revenue to confirm income and withholdings.
  • Those who do not claim deductions, credits, or carryovers.
  • Individuals who did not make estimated tax payments in the last year.

The Department estimates that around 100,000 residents could be eligible for Fast File. They have also mailed letters to likely candidates to inform them about this new program.

According to Pat Brown, the Secretary of the Department of Revenue, “Under Governor Shapiro’s leadership, we are consistently seeking methods to cut costs and offer new and improved services. Our Fast File initiative exemplifies that commitment and our belief that Pennsylvanians deserve an easier way to manage their tax duties.”

Brown added, “This is particularly relevant since the state already possesses information from employers detailing exactly how much tax was deducted from last year’s wages. We’re eager to see this program fully operational and hope it helps many Pennsylvanians save time and money this tax season.”
