Reaction to the Assassination of Charlie Kirk
The Pentagon has stated that it is monitoring military personnel and civilian employees for any celebrations or mockery related to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist. They have made it clear that inappropriate behavior will be addressed promptly.
Kirk, who co-founded Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on Wednesday. The suspected shooter, identified as Tyler Robinson, 22, was reportedly turned in by family members.
“It is unacceptable for military personnel and Department of War civilians to celebrate or mock the assassination of a fellow American. The Department of War has zero tolerance for it,” said Sean Parnell, a Pentagon spokesman, in a post on Thursday.
The Secretary of War echoed these sentiments, confirming that they are closely tracking any such incidents and will respond immediately, calling the behavior “completely unacceptable.”
Navy Secretary John C. Phelan also noted that he was aware of social media posts disparaging Kirk after his death. He emphasized that anyone in the Department of the Navy who acts in a way that undermines the organization would face swift consequences.
In the aftermath, various left-leaning individuals took to social media to express their disdain for Kirk, with some even celebrating his death. A notable account, Libs of TikTok, has been highlighting public workers who appeared to justify the assassination.
One post alleged that a nurse at the University of Virginia Health System made several comments that were critical of Kirk and celebrated his demise. The nurse reportedly stated she would not mourn a “known white supremacist.”
In her comments, she described him as “a disgusting, vile human being” and suggested that no one should mourn those she deemed wicked.
The university responded by thanking the account for bringing the matter to their attention, while clarifying that they could not disclose details about individual cases. They insisted such comments do not represent the institution’s views.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump urged Kirk’s supporters to respond nonviolently, reaffirming that Kirk was an advocate for nonviolence in his messaging.
He expressed his broader concerns for the country, mentioning a “radical left group of lunatics” that he believes need to be addressed. When asked about his own safety, he said he wasn’t particularly worried, emphasizing instead the need for national concern.
