As the Google Search Monopoly Case’s bailout phase continued, a witness to the confusion of AI startups testified that the exclusive contract of search giants prevented smartphone maker Motorola from setting confusion AI as the default assistant for new devices. AI Executive says Google’s exclusive contract is something like a “gun to the head” from a device manufacturer’s perspective.
Bloomberg Report During the ongoing relief phase of the search antitrust trial against Google, Prplexity Chief Business Officer Dmitry Shevelenko revealed that the internet giant agreement with Motorola has blocked smartphone makers from becoming Perplexity AI as the default assistant for new devices.
According to Shevelenko, Perplexity’s AI app is not the default AI assistant for Motorola Devices, as Motorola “cannot change the device’s default assistant because it cannot escape from Google’s obligations.” Instead, the Perplexity app will be preloaded on a new Motorola smartphone, but not shown on the home screen that the user first checks when logging in.
Shevelenko said Perplexity has one agreement in which AI assistants will be pre-installed on company devices, and is currently negotiating another agreement without revealing the names of the companies involved. He also reaches a partnership with airlines and phone makers to distribute company apps is a challenging task, likening Google’s contracts to “guns in your head” and risking losing an important source of income even if Google does something he doesn’t like. As reported previously by Breitbart News, Google pays Apple an incredible $20 billion a year, maintaining its search monopoly.
The Justice Department has requested Judge Amit Meta, who oversees the case, to ban Google from default payments on search engines, and its ban should also apply to Google’s AI products, such as Gemini, which claims to benefit from the company’s illegal search monopoly. Furthermore, DOJ and the US group argue that Google should be forced to sell its popular Chrome web browser.
Shevelenko estimated it took 10-15 minutes to change the default AI assistant on Android phones to bewildered from Google’s Gemini, and needed help from one of the company’s IT staff. He stressed that fawn makers and carriers should be free from the threat of Google’s restrictive contracts and revenue losses.
Interestingly, Shevelenko said that none of the baffling partnerships would have come to fruition without the Department of Justice Antimonopoly lawsuit against Google, as pressure on the search giants made Phonemakers, Carrier and Browser more open to dialogue with other companies.
When asked about the potential sales of Google’s Chrome browser, Shevelenko said she didn’t want Openai, the maker of ChatGpt, to get it because of a previous reversal to its commitment to open source. Perplexity is developing its own browser Comet based on Chromium, the open source version of Google’s Chrome, and we hope that sales will ensure continuous support for the open source version.
