Persistent beeping from Waymo self-driving cars irritating California residents

Residents in Santa Monica, California, are raising concerns over persistent noise from Waymo’s driverless vehicles. The autonomous passenger service, which operates in multiple states, has sparked complaints as its charging station seems to create nearly constant beeping sounds.

Many locals are reporting issues, stating, “It feels like the beeping never ends,” particularly as state regulations mandate that electric vehicles must reverse in a specific way, much like delivery trucks. According to reports, Waymo vehicles beep when leaving the charging station, when maneuvering to pick up passengers early in the morning, and even late at night when returning.

Some residents are suffering from stress-related illnesses, while others have taken a stand against the vehicles. There are reports of residents staging protests to block the entry of Waymo’s fleet of 56 cars into company-affiliated parking areas, prompting intervention from city officials and law enforcement.

One resident, Darius Boone, shared his frustration: “I initially thought it was cool, but then the sounds started, and I realized this can’t continue.” Local media indicate that even city officials were surprised by how Waymo established its operations, utilizing pre-existing charging infrastructure without much public awareness.

A spokesperson for Waymo stated that the company plans to improve its integration into the community, focusing on how it introduces itself. Local leaders are acknowledging the challenges, noting that regulatory frameworks are a significant factor in the ongoing situation.

Measures are in place aimed at reducing noise, such as limiting staff hours at the lots, implementing quieter maintenance practices, and installing bamboo to help absorb sound. However, the effectiveness of these actions is still under scrutiny.

Mayor Pro-Tem Caroline Torosis expressed understanding for the residents’ concerns, highlighting that existing regulations contribute to the problem. “We have to consider the tranquility of our community,” she remarked. Discussions are ongoing about how to balance innovation in transportation with residents’ needs.

Waymo’s representatives emphasize their commitment to being good community partners and are actively working with local officials to mitigate noise concerns.
