New Details Emerge in Minnesota Lawmakers’ Shooting Case

Recent court documents have uncovered that the individual charged in the shootings of two Minnesota state lawmakers and their spouses was a “prepper,” having once shared a “bailout plan” with his wife for emergencies.

The term “prepper” typically describes someone who accumulates supplies, anticipating a future crisis or apocalyptic event.

In an unsealed affidavit obtained by WCCO, FBI agent Terry Getsch detailed how the suspect, Boelter, had planned for various scenarios, instructing his wife to seek refuge at her mother’s house in Wisconsin. Getsch noted that during a search of her vehicle, law enforcement found a revolver in the glove box, along with a semi-automatic pistol stored in a cooler.

Authorities also discovered a safe, passports belonging to Boelter and his children, and over $10,000 in cash. Boelter’s wife relayed to investigators that he had recently messaged their children in a group text, urging them to prepare for a conflict and suggesting that individuals with firearms could be approaching their home.

The affidavit described Boelter and his wife as preppers, individuals who typically hoard supplies such as weapons, food, and fuel. Boelter had given his wife a specific plan for what to do in case of emergencies, directing the family to travel to Spring Brook, Wisconsin, where her mother resides.

Additionally, Boelter’s wife informed investigators about her husband’s business partner, who was based in Washington. They supposedly collaborated on a security and fishing business in Congo, Africa. However, there’s no indication that she knew about any malicious intentions involving the lawmakers, and she has not faced criminal charges.

Boelter, who previously served as an appointee under Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, is being investigated for his alleged connection to the murder of State Representative Melissa Hortman and the shooting of another lawmaker, State Senator John Hoffman. Governor Walz described the shootings as “politically motivated.”

Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot multiple times but are currently recovering.

In more findings, additional court filings revealed that police found a storage unit rented by Boelter in Minneapolis on June 10. He last accessed it just a day before the shootings, revealing empty rifle cases, gun cleaning supplies, and a bicycle.
