PETA sends letter to SEC demanding no animal mascots

Activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to the commissioner of college football's Southeastern Conference demanding that animals not be used as mascots.

There are several teams in the SEC that have animal mascots, including the Mississippi State Bulldogs' mascot. bullyGeorgia Bulldogs mascot Ugaand the Texas Longhorns mascot. bebo.

PETA took particular issue with Bevo ahead of the Cotton Bowl, saying it had concerns not only for Bevo's own interests but also for public safety.

Citing the bright lights, loud noises and “chaos of a noisy soccer stadium” packed with fans, PETA said Bebo was feeling stressed and scared, putting everyone at risk. Ta.

“Allowing him to attend the Cotton Bowl Classic is grossly irresponsible. We urge you to ban this senseless and dangerous behavior.” I wrote Tracy Lyman, executive vice president of PETA.

“It is natural for Bebo to spend his days grazing with the herd.”

Bebo has been a part of Texas football since around 1916, but PETA cited the 2019 Sugar Bowl as an example of the most “horrendous incident,” when Georgia's Uga was “nearly trampled” by a bull on the sideline. he pointed out.

This incident was not as critical as I thought, but potentially dangerous situationno one was hurt in the five-second scrum.

Lyman went on to call the use of longhorns as mascots “cruel” and a recipe for disaster.

“Bebo deserves to spend his days grazing with his herd. Being forced into a stadium full of bright lights, screaming fans and frightening noises is stressful and even frightening.”

Fortunately, there are many Bebo-centered documentary This piece shows how much mascots are treated with care.

Not only is Bebo blessed with a large ranch and loving handlers from a university, but the steers are trained from an early age to be comfortable around people. From weddings to presidential events, this bull has no shortage of public experience, but the idea that bulls are scared or stressed is far from the truth. It seems so.

The rancher also trains specific handlers to transport Bebo to and from each event. These student positions are very historic and popular as well.

PETA is certainly having a hard time considering many teams have animal mascots.

The Colorado Buffaloes have the following buffalo names: RalphieSMU has a stallion named. pernaand the Army team mule.

Still, PETA's request that only “voluntary human mascots” be used in College Football Playoff games raises questions about how many NCAA teams actually use involuntary human mascots. It is occurring.
