Pete Hegseth Inquired About the Differences Between the Venezuela Military Operation and the Iraq War

U.S. Action in Venezuela: Implications and Reactions

Army Secretary Pete Hegseth shared on CBS Evening News that capturing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro could significantly enhance U.S. interests in the Western Hemisphere, contrasting this action with the Iraq War.

According to President Donald Trump, U.S. forces, including elite Delta Force units, were involved in an operation that led to Maduro and his wife’s arrest in Caracas early Saturday morning. Trump emphasized that there were no American casualties during this mission. During the interview, host Tony Dokoupil made comparisons to the Iraq War, in which Hegseth had served.

“There were tears of joy in Caracas after the mission’s success,” acknowledged Dokoupil. “In Miami, Venezuelan refugees seemed genuinely excited about Maduro’s downfall. It’s understandable; the country has such immense oil resources, yet people struggle with rising prices and hunger.”

However, Dokoupil also raised concerns that many Americans might feel a sense of déjà vu, recalling the Iraq War, which resulted in significant losses. He noted that some Trump supporters might be pondering the differences in this situation and how it aligns with U.S. interests.

While most of Trump’s supporters appeared supportive of the move, some voiced worries about the announcement that the U.S. would “run” Venezuela until a stable “transition of power” was achieved.

“After decades of attempting to change things without economic gain, President Trump seems to assert that through strategic actions, we can access new wealth and resources without further sacrificing American lives,” Hegseth responded. “This was a courageous decision but one that had been carefully planned. Our military had time to prepare. With the right resources, we undertook this bold action which ultimately serves the American people.”

Hegseth held that Venezuela, once a prosperous nation, has suffered under poor leadership, and that re-establishing the Monroe Doctrine might benefit both the U.S. and the Western Hemisphere. He expressed optimism that the recent actions would bring positive changes.
