Peter Navarro Asks DOJ to Clarify Its Change in Position on His Case

Navarro Challenges DOJ on Subpoena Case

Peter Navarro, an advisor to Donald Trump, has requested clarification from the Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding the shift in its course related to his past legal troubles. Last year, Navarro spent four months in prison after resisting a subpoena from the January 6 committee; now, he believes that the DOJ needs to justify its change in position.

“The Justice Department can’t just backtrack on its stance over the last three years without offering an explanation,” Navarro stated on Sunday. He emphasized that this lack of clarity leaves both the courts and the public questioning whether the decision is based on principle or perhaps influenced by other factors.

Currently, Navarro serves as a senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, a role he previously held during Trump’s first term. In August, he noted that his current views do not align with those of the previous administration, which prompted the court to appoint outside counsel to support his conviction. He also requested that the court dismiss a submission made by Biden’s DOJ in September.

Navarro’s comments highlight his belief that if the DOJ alters its previously assertive approach, it must provide reasons for doing so. He insists that understanding the scope of enforcement privileges related to Congress’s subpoena is essential.

While the Supreme Court has denied a request to delay Navarro’s reporting to prison in March 2024, his appeal remains active. Navarro was indicted in 2022 and was arrested by the FBI at Reagan National Airport while en route to a speaking engagement. Trump expressed his support for Navarro, stating last December that he was mistreated by the “deep state.” Steve Bannon, another adviser, also faced sentencing last year for charges related to Congress.
