Philadelphia DA warns ICE agents at airport that Trump cannot grant them pardons

Philadelphia County District Attorney Lawrence Krasner recently voiced strong criticism against the Trump administration for deploying ICE agents to airports. This action came during a period when TSA personnel were going unpaid due to funding issues orchestrated by Democrats affecting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Krasner, a Democrat whose campaign has some financial ties to George Soros, has long been vocal against President Trump and DHS regarding immigration policies. He has even suggested potential repercussions for ICE agents in his jurisdiction if they violate local laws, echoing concerns raised by a situation in Minnesota.

Addressing the media from an airport location, Krasner contended that officials from the Trump administration were creating confusion about legality. He specified he would not acknowledge requests for clemency from President Trump.

Krasner made a pointed statement regarding legal ramifications for those breaking city laws. He expressed his commitment to prosecuting anyone who commits crimes within Philadelphia’s jurisdiction regardless of their position or influence.

“We cannot allow the killing of unarmed individuals to be normalized in Philadelphia,” he remarked, asserting that such actions are unacceptable.

While Vice President J.D. Vance stayed silent on the matter, the White House expressed disapproval of Krasner’s comments made in front of a local mural, which have drawn significant backlash.

Krasner emphasized that despite his disapproval of certain DHS policies, like mass deportations, there are many dedicated employees within the agency. He warned ICE agents against acting unlawfully, stating they would face legal consequences in Philadelphia’s courts.

In response to a reporter’s observations about the city’s lack of authority over ICE agents, Krasner clarified he was not against their presence in Philadelphia but pointed out a concerning shift in their responsibilities, particularly their involvement in TSA operations.

Krasner further articulated that this deployment of ICE could instill fear among foreign visitors, citing reports of canceled hotel bookings ahead of the FIFA World Cup due to potential ICE encounters. He mentioned concerns expressed by Scottish soccer fans about severe interactions with ICE due to their accents, labeling it a detrimental economic impact on Philadelphia.

“It’s alarming that this administration’s policies are effectively harming our economy,” he added. He acknowledged that while the ICE agents’ roles were legally sanctioned, the situation was troubling nonetheless.

Other Democratic leaders, including Senator Richard Blumenthal, have also criticized ICE’s airport presence, indicating that it exacerbates delays and creates unsafe situations for travelers. Blumenthal described the tactics used by ICE as cruel and unnecessary, while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries highlighted concerns over the lack of proper training for ICE agents tasked with these responsibilities.

As this debate continues, the complications surrounding ICE’s role at airports remain a point of contention, reflecting broader concerns about immigration enforcement and public safety.
