Philz Coffee is expressing regret over the strong backlash it received after announcing plans to stop displaying the Rainbow Flag in its stores.
Initially, the San Francisco coffee chain faced criticism for its intent to remove Pride flags from its cafes. However, it has now reversed its decision and confirmed that it will continue to showcase the vibrant symbol.
On Friday, the company stated it would retain the Pride flag following criticism from customers, employees, and LGBTQ advocates, as reported by NBC Bay Area.
CEO Mahesh Sadarangani issued an apology, acknowledging the confusion caused by the effort to standardize décor and expressing regret to staff, customers, and the LGBTQIA+ community.
Sadarangani mentioned that the Pride flag represents safety and a sense of belonging for many, and they don’t want to strip that away from anyone who visits Philz. He further indicated that he had discussions with leaders from San Francisco Pride about the backlash.
The decision to keep the flag comes in response to an outpouring of criticism, including an online petition urging the company to maintain the flag, a request that came from Philz employees as well.
Previously, the California Post noted that Philz faced major backlash after declaring its plans to alter its store décor to create a more “consistent and inclusive experience.” Critics argued that this move sent the wrong message during a politically charged time for LGBTQ issues.
This situation highlights how brands must navigate customer expectations when corporate policies clash with identity-driven symbolism.
“Even if the Pride flag was taken down, it can be raised again,” Sadarangani concluded.
