Phoenix Ikner charged in Florida State University mass shooting

Charges Filed in FSU Shooting Incident

A 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with a tragic mass shooting that occurred on the Florida State University campus on April 17th. Phoenix Echner now faces two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of first-degree attempted murder involving a firearm.

Reports from the Grand Jury have categorized this incident as “the worst nightmare in our community.”

Details have emerged highlighting that during the shooting, an FSU police officer intervened, leading to confrontations that resulted in gunfire. Officer Cody Popel was involved in the exchange, reportedly firing several shots, one of which struck Echner in the face.

Additionally, the judge mentioned that the accused used a shotgun and a .45 caliber pistol, both allegedly stolen from his parents, during the chaos that unfolded on the campus.

Two victims of the shooting were identified as Robert Morales and Til Chava.

Following the indictment, Chava’s family released a statement expressing hope that the investigation would bring some closure to the affected families.

After spending several weeks in the hospital recuperating from a jaw injury sustained during the event, Echner appeared in court this week. He was represented by public defender Randall Harper as it was noted he was without financial means.

While awaiting further proceedings, Echner is currently detained at the Wakulla County Detention Facility.

Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Level emphasized their commitment to justice and thanked the dedicated professionals involved in the ongoing investigation.
