A Big Apple pickup truck driver has been charged with attempted murder in a stabbing during a road rage incident that began in Queens and ended on the Upper East Side Tuesday night, authorities said.
Police said Antar Lakatos, 28, who was driving a Mercedes sedan, intentionally crashed into the pickup truck of Shaker Ahmad, 38, on the Queensboro Bridge around 6:50 p.m. .
After the vehicle stopped, Lakatos got out of the car and opened the trunk, at which point Ahmad sped away, police said.
But Lakatos continued the chase, catching up with Ahmad at East 62nd Street and Lexington Avenue, this time hitting a pickup truck and crashing into a utility pole, police and sources said.
Officials said patrol officers from the 19th Precinct were eating at a Smash Burger restaurant across the street when they heard the crash and rushed over.
Officials say Ahmad got out of the truck and ran to the victim’s Mercedes, where he stabbed the victim multiple times while he was sitting in the driver’s seat.
The injured Mr Lakatos fell from the car and police officers came to his aid while another officer handcuffed Mr Ahmad.
Police said Ahmad was charged with attempted murder, assault and possession of a weapon.
Lakatos was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. He was charged with attempted assault, police said.
Ahmad served 18 months in prison from February 2016 to August 2018 in connection with a second-degree assault conviction, according to state correctional records.
Police said Lakatos was arrested in June 2019 for driving with a suspended license, and about two months ago in Queens on suspicion of grand theft of a motor vehicle.
