A longtime school employee in a central Pennsylvania community died when the small plane he was piloting crashed shortly after taking off from an airport.

Chester County Emergency Services said Sam Garneau was the only person aboard the twin-engine Gulfstream American GA-7 that crashed just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The aircraft crashed between a house and several trees, but there was no damage to the house and no injuries were reported on the ground.

The plane had left Coatesville County Airport a few minutes earlier. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
Garneau, 65, of Cochranville, is the Octorara Area School District board president and served on the school’s board for 26 years.

“His commitment to education and tireless efforts to improve the educational experience for our students will be a great honor to our district,” Superintendent Steven Lieber said in a message posted on the district’s website. It had a lasting impact.”
