Pismo Beach Named Best Small Coastal Town in the U.S.
A peaceful getaway on the Central Coast has been recognized as the top small coastal town in the United States, and locals aren’t the least bit surprised.
Pismo Beach took the crown in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards, outperforming various other beloved seaside locations thanks to a strong showing of online votes.
This charming beach town, home to just over 8,000 residents, is known for its expansive sandy beaches and relaxed vibe. It has long attracted Californians eager to escape the busier tourist spots while still enjoying stunning ocean views.
Pismo earned the nickname “Clam Capitol of the World” due to its history with a flourishing shellfish industry, a legacy that still influences its coastal character.
What makes the town particularly appealing? Perhaps it’s the classic California blend of beautiful beaches, nearby wineries, and a walkable downtown area where you can stroll from surf spots to outlet stores to oceanfront dining—all within a single afternoon.
Outdoor lovers are drawn to a variety of activities, ranging from surfing and fishing to hiking and camping at nearby Pismo State Beach, which boasts about 27 miles of pristine coastline and serves as a seasonal refuge for monarch butterflies.
“You can hike, surf, visit wineries,” one traveler noted on a subreddit dedicated to Travel. “The live music scene is fantastic, and the climate is among the most enjoyable anywhere. People here are friendly, too.”
Another comment reflected the town’s easygoing nature: Pismo Beach supposedly embodies that quintessential California beach vibe you might see in music videos. “You see people surfing, fishing, or just relaxing on the sand,” they said.
Some locals expressed concerns about the attention drawing more tourists to their quiet community. “Shhh,” one person commented on Instagram. “I kind of want to keep this place a secret.”
Other worthy mentions from California also made it into the rankings: Morro Bay, known for its impressive Morro Rock and playful otters; Avalon on Catalina Island, a quaint retreat with beaches and snorkeling; and Carmel-by-the-Sea, celebrated for its fairytale cottages and vibrant art scene.
California clearly remains at the forefront of beach towns. Pismo Beach now holds the top position for the second consecutive year, reinforcing what many residents have known all along.
