The Pittsburgh Pirates' 2025 season has been off to a historically unstable start.
The Pirates began the season with a four-game set against the Miami Marlins, finishing with a 1-3 record. Winroth's total does not show how harsh these three losses are.

In each of Pittsburgh's three losses, Miami won in walk-off fashion. In Sunday's game, Marlins outfielder Griffin Connine tied the game with a solo home run in seven innings, while Derek Hill scored a game-winning run on the wild pitch.

“It's challenging,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “There are a few things to tackle.”
The opening day for the spoiled Marlins Paul Skens began on Thursday when Nick Forbes tripled and began his nine innings. Xavier Edwards deliberately walked and stole two bases. Kyle Storers then won the first win of the season over pinch runners Javier Sanoja and Miami.

On Saturday, Dane Myers drove for Otto Lopez at the bottom of the 12 innings. Myers also ran a home run and dumped Tommy Femme, who was trying to score for the Pirates at the top of the 12th.
Pirates Reliever David Bedner was recognized for two of these walk-off losses.
“Lock it in and do the little things right,” Pirates veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen told reporters a message from the locker room. “If not, this is the situation and this could happen, so I keep knocking on it.
“This is the result of not doing small things right. It's fine if you do it when you need to do it and do what you need when you're hit. But otherwise it's 1-3.”
The Pirates will begin their three-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.

Miami is the first team since 2003 to win their first three games on the walk-off. The Rays finished 63-99 under Loupiniera, 3-5 to start that season.
