Midair Collision in Pennsylvania Results in Fatality

A tragic accident occurred Wednesday night when a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter collided with a small plane, resulting in the death of the plane’s pilot and injuries to two state troopers. The incident took place around 7:50 p.m. near Carlisle Airport in central Pennsylvania, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration.

According to Lt. Col. George Bivens, who is acting as the chief of the Pennsylvania State Police, the helicopter was involved in a routine training exercise at the airport, located approximately 190 miles west of Philadelphia, when the collision happened.

During a news conference, Bivens explained, “For unknown reasons, the Cessna veered to the right at the last moment and struck the helicopter from behind, hitting the tail rotor and main rotor, which led to a violent crash.” The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing, and federal investigators have yet to determine the probable cause.

Tragically, one person on the Cessna did not survive. “We believe the pilot was the only occupant of the Cessna,” Bivens noted.

The two state troopers aboard the helicopter found themselves trapped initially but were rescued and taken to the hospital. Fortunately, they are expected to make a full recovery, as mentioned by Governor Josh Shapiro, who expressed relief over their safety during a press briefing.

Following the incident, Governor Shapiro stated, “I’m pleased to say that two Pennsylvania state troopers are safe and sound after an air crash.” He also mentioned the importance of prayer and urged fellow Pennsylvanians to join him in supporting those affected by this tragedy.

The investigation will be under the jurisdiction of the National Transportation Safety Board, with assistance from the FAA.
