Planet Fitness said her prior professional experience spans hospitality, real estate and franchise management, including holding various positions at InterContinental Hotels Group and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide.

Benson will remain on Planet Fitness’ board of directors, the company said.

“I look forward to working with the management team to get the business off the ground on a path to sustainable growth and value creation,” Keating said.

The fitness chain’s board appointed Benson as interim CEO as it chose to “transition to new management,” with Chris Rondeau stepping down from the top job in mid-September.

The company is promoting a “new growth model” to overcome the uncertain macroeconomic environment and other challenges. The strategy is focused on “increasing revenue and reducing the capital required to open and maintain Planet His Fitness franchise locations,” Benson said.

The company has faced backlash in recent weeks over its policy of allowing people to use locker rooms that correspond to their gender identity.

The chain revoked an Alaska woman’s membership just days after a transgender woman, who is biologically male, was photographed shaving in a women’s locker room, the Daily Mail reports. The company’s valuation plummeted by $400 million, from $5.3 billion to $4.9 billion.

Planet Fitness CEO McCall Gosselin clarified the company’s policies regarding gender identity in a previous statement to Fox News Digital.

“As the home of the Judgment Free Zone, Planet Fitness is committed to creating an inclusive environment,” he said in a statement.

“Our gender identity non-discrimination policy provides that members and guests have access to gym facilities that best match their truthfully self-declared gender identity. Violated our mobile device policy that prohibits users from entering the locker room, resulting in the termination of your membership. ”

Nearly 19 million Planet Fitness members use the company’s more than 2,500 locations.
