Platner secures victory in Maine Democratic Senate Primary election

Graham Platner Secures Democratic Nomination for U.S. Senate

Graham Platner, an experienced oyster farmer, has clinched the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Maine, setting up a showdown with incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in the upcoming November elections.

Reports indicate that Platner garnered 133,483 votes, which accounts for about 71.8% of the votes counted so far, with a substantial portion—around 84%—of the ballots processed.

David A. Costello, the Interim Climate and Clean Energy Program Director for the Natural Resources Council of Maine, secured 8.3% of the votes. A write-in candidate, Andrea Laflamme, managed 0.4%. Notably, Platner’s main competitor, Maine Governor Janet T. Mills, withdrew earlier in April.

Platner’s background includes joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 2003 during the Iraq War, with three deployments before he attended George Washington University. He later reenlisted in 2009, this time with the Maryland Army National Guard, and was deployed to Afghanistan.

As for his current role, Platner began working at his hometown oyster farm in 2018, according to his biography. He met his wife, Amy Gartner, in 2023, and they share two dogs and a cat.

Per his campaign statements, Platner expresses strong beliefs about healthcare, asserting it as a fundamental human right and advocating for Medicare for All, as well as resisting cuts to both Medicare and Medicaid.

On immigration, he has some unconventional views for a Democrat; he supports strong border security along with a pathway to citizenship while condemning the exploitation of undocumented workers by large corporations.

Platner attracted significant attention last year due to the revelation of a tattoo on his chest—a skull and crossbones resembling the Nazi Totenkopf symbol. He later covered it up, claiming he was unaware of its association with the Nazi regime at the time he got it.

Additionally, past inflammatory remarks made by Platner on Reddit between 2013 and 2021 have surfaced, containing anti-LGBT+ slurs and racially insensitive comments. Although he apologized, he framed it as youthful indiscretion.

Recently, another controversy emerged regarding explicit messages Platner had sent to women on Kik, which reportedly came to light through his wife’s disclosure. The couple addressed this in a joint video where he acknowledged past mistakes but stated they had worked through issues via counseling.

In a revealing exposé published this month, former girlfriends accused Platner of physical intimidation and misogynistic behavior. He denied all allegations of physical or domestic violence but conceded he wasn’t always a great partner.

“I’m not just running against Susan Collins. I’m running against her and the billionaire class that owns all of Washington,” Platner stated, critiquing his opponent’s positions and support.

Senator Collins holds the distinction of being Maine’s longest-serving legislator and a prominent figure in the Senate. As chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, she focuses on legislation pertaining to healthcare, government funding, and support for the aging population. Her initiatives have included the bipartisan Insulin Act and the Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act.
