FHP and Border Patrol Arrest 15 Illegal Immigrants in Key Largo

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), in collaboration with the U.S. Border Patrol, detained 15 undocumented immigrants with criminal backgrounds last week during a focused operation in Key Largo.

This initiative, part of Operation Tidal Wave, took place on March 9 and was executed by FHP’s Criminal Alien Apprehension Team (CAAT) alongside U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

According to officials, all individuals arrested had prior criminal records. Their charges included serious offenses such as assault, domestic violence, drug-related crimes, robbery, theft, burglary, aggravated assault, firearm offenses, and obstruction of justice. A number had already faced deportation proceedings and missed court appearances.

Dave Kerner, executive director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), stated, “The Florida Highway Patrol takes the lead in apprehending illegal criminals who commit violent crimes here and abroad. Our Criminal Alien Enforcement Team and our federal partners work to remove criminal aliens from our streets. It’s our responsibility, and Florida will continue to take decisive action to protect our residents.”

Those apprehended hailed from various countries, including Cuba, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and Guatemala, and were illegally residing in the U.S.

Since March 2025, FHP has made over 9,000 arrests of illegal immigrants under the federal 287(g) program, including more than 1,600 individuals with criminal histories.

FLHSMV reiterated its commitment to the safety of Florida’s roads and communities, expressing, “This operation emphasizes our resolve to protect communities from individuals involved in criminal activity and violations of U.S. immigration laws. Through coordinated efforts like Operation Tidal Wave, we proactively identify threats, uphold public safety, and hold accountable those who disregard the law.”

Miami Acting Chief Patrol Agent Samuel Briggs commented on the importance of collaboration, stating, “Border security is a whole-of-government effort, and our mission’s success relies on strong partnerships with federal, state, and local agencies, including the Florida Highway Patrol. Our partners are essential for enabling quick and effective responses to threats to protect our communities and secure our borders.”
