Police apprehend almost a dozen teenagers in weekend fights during 'teen takeover' events.

Teen Takeovers Result in Arrests in Washington, D.C.

Over the weekend in Washington, D.C., authorities arrested about a dozen youths linked to a series of disturbances, referred to as “teen takeovers.” These events included fights in the streets and assaults on police officers.

The trouble began around 8:30 PM on Saturday when police were called to respond to multiple reports of disturbances in the southwest part of the city, according to sources.

Investigators shared that a large number of teens had gathered between the Navy Yard curfew and the nearby pier—this area being just a few blocks from the curfew zone that the authorities established.

“They’re coming from Maryland, they’re coming from Virginia, they’re just being disrespectful here in the 6th Ward. It’s like a ‘meeting house’ for them,” one local resident explained.

The first altercation occurred in the 1300 block of Canal Street, leading to the arrest of a 17-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl, and a 12-year-old girl. Shortly after, another fight erupted at First Street and Southwest North Street, resulting in the detention of a 15-year-old boy for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Another significant conflict broke out around 9 PM. During this time, several juveniles were reported to have attacked law enforcement officers. Consequently, two girls aged 15 and 16 were arrested for fighting in public.

Additionally, two 14-year-olds—a boy and a girl—were detained on charges of assaulting an officer, fighting, and resisting arrest. Witness footage from the scene depicted a chaotic scene where a group of boys were seen fighting, with one group surrounding an officer before dispersing.

In total, eight teenagers were reported arrested due to the escalating violence over the weekend. One local emphasized the need for parental involvement, stating, “Kids are going to be kids, and parents really need to focus on what they’re doing.”

This violence coincided with evening events organized by the Department of Parks and Recreation for teens, which included the establishment of several youth curfew zones across the city. A rule currently in effect limits individuals under 18 from congregating in groups of nine or more in public spaces, along with a citywide curfew that runs from 11 PM to 6 AM.

Authorities had earlier enacted the Second Temporary Amendment to the Youth Confinement Act of 2025, allowing for curfew zones to ensure public safety in bustling areas.

Recently, City Council members have been deliberating on emergency legislation that could extend the powers of authorities to enforce curfews on minors once the current law expires next month.

The Metropolitan Police Department did not respond to requests for comments regarding these incidents.
