Florida Woman Arrested for Allegedly Running Fake Medical Spa
A woman in Florida has been arrested for allegedly operating a fraudulent medical spa out of her backyard shed while posing as a doctor. Rosa Mena faces several felony charges, including practicing without a license and multiple counts of battery, after an unidentified victim claimed to have suffered from facial paralysis following her treatments.
The victim told authorities that she sought Botox injections at Mena’s makeshift spa, receiving a second treatment that did not resolve her issues. When the victim requested to see Mena’s medical license and certifications, she was reportedly told that Mena was a doctor from the Dominican Republic but was unable to provide any proof.
During a search of Mena’s residence, police uncovered various medical devices, including a treatment bed designed for Botox and fillers, a fat sculpting device, and an injectable tool. Local police shared images of these items on social media, urging residents to be cautious and conduct thorough research before seeking any medical treatments.
“It’s essential to vet both the facilities and the individuals administering these procedures. Botox treatments should only be performed by licensed professionals. Your safety is our utmost concern,” the police stated.
Dr. Brian Hass, a plastic surgeon in Palm Beach Gardens, noted that while Mena’s operations were not legitimate, similar scams aren’t rare. He mentioned having heard of a comparable situation in Miami and expressed disappointment, although not surprise, over the news.
“These are serious treatments,” he remarked about Botox injections. “Just like you wouldn’t put inferior fuel in your car, you shouldn’t put anything unsafe into your body,” he added.
Currently, Mena is being held at the St. Lucie County Jail, while the woman who sought treatment from her is reportedly consulting with a licensed doctor regarding her facial paralysis.
